From the Desk of Jeff Lann, Executive Director of the Oral Hull Foundation

Greetings and best wishes for the New Year! It’s hard to believe that our 2009 calendars are in the recycling bins and we have entered a new year and a new decade. To look at the Oral Hull Foundation today, one can unquestionably see that things that we planned to do are the things that we are doing.
The Oral Hull Foundation has grown in its diversity of services and its impact on a larger community of people looking for high quality programs and first-rate customer service.
Highlights of 2009 include record breaking enrollment in our summer camp program; a more active role and commitment from Lions Clubs and Kiwanis Clubs; upgrading our facility with the support of 200+ volunteers from Mountainview Christian Church; hosting the statewide convention of the American Council of the Blind; increasing the use of Oral Hull Park by community groups and undertaking a strategic planning process by our board of directors that will help establish what Oral Hull Park will look like in the immediate future.
Despite our successes, the current economic climate and an anticipated slow recovery period make for uncertain times. All of us as Oral Hull members, friends, family and sister agencies share a collective role in determining how we respond to these challenges. These are some of the questions we need to consider together:
How can we assure our financial well being so that we will continue to thrive and provide service and maintain our facility through times of both economic boom and economic bust?
How can we continue to provide to all who might need our help but do not have the financial means to pay for our services?
How can we partner with our sister agencies to provide programs and services that are friendly to the needs of the blind and low vision community?
How can we collaborate further with the broader community to advance our common goals and objectives?
As we explore these questions, we welcome your input and assistance. We are always grateful to our supporters and constituents and will continue to move forward in fulfilling our mission of service to the blind and low vision communities.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

In every quarterly newsletter of the View we feature an article written by an Oral Hull member. The following was submitted by Kae L. Seth.
Member perspective: What does Oral Hull Mean to Me?
Recently, the American Council of the Blind of Oregon held its statewide convention at Oral Hull Foundation for the Blind. After the convention was over, and everyone had gone, I pondered, exactly what does Oral Hull Park really mean to me?
Oral Hull Park has always been a place where blind folks have come for recreation and fun and to learn. The American Council of the Blind, of which I am a member, has been active in Oral Hull’s beginnings, and in its present efforts to bring about help to blind Oregonians. Many of our members have been active in its history, and in its programs and have often spent many hours building, making friends, fishing, and sharing their lives with friends of all kinds.
When I joined the Council in 1978, I heard of Oral Hull Park and soon came out to visit. I came to know folks like Louie and Nellie Waymire, who were active members; Louie would always remind us about Oral Hull; what was happening, and how beautiful the grounds were. Many of us came on weekends to get away from the rat race of Portland; we took our guide dogs on long hikes, and often went down to the lower level where we could turn our dogs’ loose to romp and play with one another.
I came to know special people who loved Oral Hull and made it a part of their lives. Jeff Cohen, Martha Hawthorn and others were often there and we spent a lot of time just having fun.
Oral Hull always represented a place where blind folks could come and have fun; it seemed to be a place where we shared ideas; laughed a lot, and ate a lot too—kind of like now.
I believe that just as the American Council of the Blind was involved when I first joined, we can be participating in the realization of dreams and help create a new vision for the future of this great foundation. I hope, that even though many of my old friends who were here are gone, we can rekindle friendships, and create new memories that will bring about a transformation from the past; I look forward to the time when we can make this a place of learning; healing and hope. Each of us has an opportunity to be a part of history.
Bailey my guide dog and I look forward to getting to know all of you; we hope that we can make new friends and rekindle old friendships. Let’s make Oral Hull Park ring with laughter, blaze with beauty and be a place of peace and restoration for everyone.
I hope that you’ll share your ideas with us, so that we can all learn from one another. Just as I came to know about Oral Hull from its pioneers, I hope that I can help folks blaze new trails and bring about the making of dreams for blind and sighted folks for years to come.
Please come and say hi to Bailey and I, when we’re here so we can get to know you. Isn’t that what Oral Hull is all about?

Acts of Loving-Kindness! from the desk of Jeff Lann, executive director

Acts of loving-kindness describe everything from helping an elderly neighbor go grocery shopping, to treating a homeless person on the street with respect, to participating in a service project that embraces an entire community.
The important aspects of these acts does not lie with just responding to a particular need but in the notion that volunteering is not only meaningful in and of itself but it is also rich for opportunities for learning and connecting with others. Over the past few months I have had the privilege of meeting with Mountainview Christian Church Senior Pastor TJ Southard, Involvement Pastor Craig Ziese and the staff and congregation on the Oral Hull Project.
As part of Mountainview’s community outreach, the Oral Hull Foundation has been selected to be the benefactor of two work parties involving more than 200 church members and 1,200 volunteer hours over a two day period scheduled at Oral Hull Park on Saturday June 20 and Sunday July 19.
Projects include building a new dog off leash area, replacing doors in Rainbow Lodge, building two Bocce Ball courts, adding new seating to our camp fire area, adding new hand rails leading to the Gardens of Enchantment, beautifying our grounds, trail work, painting the spa, plus many other undertakings. Donations from members of the church are paying for these projects.
On behalf of all of us at the Oral Hull Foundation for the Blind, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our friends at Mountainview Christian Church. Their selfless actions, good deeds and compassion are valued gifts. These are true acts of loving-kindness and will immediately and positively help our Oral Hull community in countless ways!
You are invited to meet our friends from Mountainview Christian Church on Sunday, July 19 at 2:00. Get involved with the work party, take a swim, and enjoy a delicious barbeque dinner a bonfire. Round-trip transportation will be provided to Portland. Call to reserve a spot on the bus.
Volunteer Braille Services Inc.
We are very pleased to announce that we have received a $25,000 donation from Volunteer Braille Services, Inc. to improve the Rainbow Lodge restrooms. Frank Synoground, Oral Hull board member, presented the check to Oral Hull President Tom Ciesielski at our 6 June board meeting. Mr. Synoground noted that we need to get the most use out of our facility and one of the drawbacks has been accessibility of the restrooms. This donation will address this need.
2009 Adult Summer Vacation programs at Oral Hull Park
Why should kids have all the fun? Trade your briefcase in for a paddle! It’s your turn to experience our one week adult vacation camps. This is your opportunity to drop everything in your busy life and spend a week with others doing only what you want to do. You can choose to relax by the pool or be active with hiking, swimming, fishing and more.

The View – Oral Hull Foundation for the Blind
Volume VII, No 2 Spring 2009
Weekender policies, transportation schedule changes and new Saturday lunch option.
It was great to see so many new faces at our April Weekender retreat. It was well attended and featured plenty of opportunities for people to get involved in activities from Kevin Sippel’s musical entertainment, relaxing in the hot tub to our spring Showdown Tournament. The Tigard and Tualatin Lions Clubs were also on hand for a work party on Saturday that added to the festive atmosphere of the day.
One administrative challenge was to make sure that we were able to accommodate everyone’s transportation needs. We added a second vehicle to achieve this purpose. The Oral Hull Foundation provides free round trip transportation to our monthly Weekenders from the Portland area. Our bus, however, has limited space and wheelchair availability. To ensure a ride on our bus, please call in and reserve your seat a minimum of 24 hours prior to the weekend. The Foundation passed a policy at the April 4, 2009 meeting that requires 72 hour advanced notice for wheelchair accommodations. For comfort and safety, each passenger is permitted to bring one medium sized suitcase (not exceeding 20 pounds) and two small pieces of hand/carry on luggage on the Oral Hull bus (to be carried on your seat). Necessary medical devices are excluded.
Beginning in June, our Weekender guests will enjoy an additional half hour at the park. Please note our earlier pickup times: Commission for the Blind 9:00a.m.; Jack in the Box on 82nd and Holgate 9:30a.m and the Gresham Transit Station at 10:00a.m. The schedule for the return trip to Portland on Sunday afternoon will remain the same.
All persons attending Weekenders must pay for their weekend at check-in time unless previously arranged with Jeff Lann, executive director. In addition to our Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning brunch, Chef Becky Stewart will be preparing a box lunch for only $6. (Minimum of 20 lunches needed) Please call 503-668-6195 to place your order.

Dennis Crow – Old Time Radio at Oral Hull Park
Dennis Crow, former Sandy High principal passed away this past year. Dennis was an educator, historian and old time radio fan. As a devotee of old time radio, Dennis often took his radio collection of 1,000 tapes and cd’s on the road to entertain community organizations. For many years, he was a regular presenter at Oral Hull where he transported listeners back to the days of “The Shadow” and “Fibber McGee and Molly“. We were recently contacted by Shirley Crow, Dennis’s wife, and learned that he donated his old time radio collection to Oral Hull’s Nelson/Green Braille Library. We send our heartfelt thanks to the Crow Family for this generous gift.
National Volunteer Week – April 19-25
We Could Not Do It Without You! Each year people give their time, talents and personal resources without compensation to enrich our services and the lives of those attending programs at Oral Hull Park. The gifts we receive from these generous individuals and organizations are immensely important and very much appreciated. We could never achieve the high level of service that we provide without our wonderful volunteers. On behalf of everyone at the Oral Hull Foundation for the Blind, we offer our sincere appreciation and gratitude.
A Road of Thanks
Each year we at Oral Hull send a request for financial assistance to all of the Lions Clubs in Oregon for the purpose of creating a scholarship fund to support low income Oregonians in attending one of our summer camps. These “camperships” are often the only way many people can attend. The following is a list of all Lions Clubs who have contributed to date this year and we again add a roar of thanks for your generosity.

The View – Oral Hull Foundation for the Blind
Volume 3, No 1 January 2009
The Oral Hull Foundation is Here for You During these Tough Times
Greetings and best wishes for the New Year! Like you, we’ve spent the past few months immersed in tough times. Every day brings new challenges, with few “positives” on the horizon when it comes to money
matters.
We’re writing to you, our members and supporters, not to let you know that times are tough; you already know that! We’re writing because we’ve observed, in tough times, just how important it is that we all look after ourselves and our friends and loved ones.
What do these observations have to do with the Oral Hull Foundation?
Oral Hull Park is the place where many of us meet important social, recreational, emotional and spiritual needs. We remain a place where you can relax and rejuvenate your mind and spirit, a place where you can escape from the stresses of everyday life. And, a community place where we all connect with others, building and maintaining the social networks that are so necessary in our lives.
Barack Obama’s campaign successfully used the slogan “Yes We Can” to launch his bid for the presidency. The belief that each individual can have an immediate impact and facilitate change for the benefit of our nation engaged and captivated the spirit of the majority of American voters. Despite all of our woes, President Obama conveyed a message of an underlying sense of determination and optimism for more promising times.
Oral Hull is a great institution in difficult times.
We are doing what’s necessary to maintain and strengthen the Oral Hull Foundation, and to make it the right place for you. We call on each and every Oral Hull participant and friend to reconnect with us and to get involved with our organization. Our history of providing outstanding opportunities to the blind and low vision communities at affordable prices is needed now more than ever. 2008 was a breakthrough year for us with a significant increase in program participation and community recognition for our services. 2009 will be more than the marking of the passage of time; it is a promise for a better future. We promise that we will be here for you…………even in tough times!
Again, best wishes for a happy, healthy, and, dare we suggest, prosperous New Year!
Jeff Lann
Oral Hull President Executive Director
Winter storm 2008: The Aftermath
The worst series of snowstorms to hit the Sandy area in 40 years created a nightmare for local residents over a ten day period in mid-December. The mixture of deep snow, ice and slush closed the Oral Hull Park office and most businesses for a week. Participants at the Oral Hull December Weekender were treated to an extended holiday stay in Rainbow Lodge and Philbin Dormitory as TriMet canceled all regular lift service. When the roads were re-opened, volunteers provided our members door-todoor service safely to their homes.
Thanks to the effort of staff members Greg Stadstad and Becky Stewart our storm damage was limited. The heavy snow load collapsed and twisted the patio roof on trailer #7 and extended sub-freezing temperatures and power outages resulted in broken water lines in various locations in the park. We expect to be operating at 100% soon.
2009 Board Members Selected
Congratulations to our newly elected board members!

Executive Director’s Letter – Jeff Lann

On October 10, 2008 I will be celebrating my second anniversary as Oral Hull’s executive director. There is not a day that goes by that I do not value and appreciate the unique role Oral Hull Park has in our community and how we positively impact people’s lives.
I am very proud of what we do as an organization and how life changing an experience at Oral Hull Park can be. This is particularly true when it comes to our summer camp programs where new discoveries are made and memories created. This enthusiasm and spirit is captured in a soon to be published article by Erin Rumer.
Erin is a Guide Dogs for the Blind staff member and her article will appear in their newsletter.
Oral Hull Summer Camp by Erin Rumer
The adventure began when my husband David who is a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Orientation and Mobility Specialist for Portland Public Schools was asked to be the Assistant Director for the Adult Adventure Week at Oral Hall Foundation in Sandy, Oregon. The Oral Hall Foundation for the blind began in 1962 and was designed to be a place for outdoor recreation for the blind and visually impaired.
Having some accumulated vacation time saved up at work I decided to partake in the exciting events this week had to offer. Oral Hall has youth camps, weekend retreats and other fun events for adults all year long, and now there is even more opportunities for folks filled with such outstanding and exhilarating activities.
There were several options of different activities to partake in each day that it made choosing difficult. Reading through the schedule of events for the week invigorated me, but I really did not know what I was getting myself into until I really took the plunge (literally) during several events. I can’t believe I actually jumped out of a perfectly good plane during our sky diving trip in Molalla, Oregon, but I did and I would do it again in a heart beat. The free falling experience was out of this world and I will never again feel sorry for myself that I can not drive a car, because I dropped from thirteen thousand feet and free fell for eight thousand feet at 120 MPH before my shoot cord was even pulled.
Now that’s speeding!
This was only one of many amazing experiences I had during this week and talk about checking off adventurous goals on my list of things I want to do during my life. Bungee jumping was a real kick and to get the most bang for my buck I not only leaped from 100 feet in the air, but I did it backwards. Admittedly, I screamed the whole way down.
Riding a Zip Line was also a thrill and offered the sensation of flying like a bird. Okay, maybe a baby bird being throne from the nest for the very first time by it’s frustrated mother, but I loved it!
Learning how to row as part of a team on a dragon boat was exciting and I now have more admiration for the athletes that do that competitively, because talk about upper body strength.
Our white water rafting trip down the Deschutes River was a wonderful combination of smooth mild riding and bumpy wave surfing. My tour guide was even kind enough to pull our raft to the side and let us pick ripe black berries off the vine for a delicious snack before lunch.
The evenings at Oral Hull were just as outstanding as the day’s with professional entertainers who would take your breath away, Karaoke, and singalongs by the camp/fire with smores just to name a few things.
On Oral Hull’s grounds there is a lovely lodge where most meals and entertainment take place. They also have a dormitory rooming up to 48 guests at one time, a rustic outdoor picnic shelter where arts and crafts classes are held, a hot tub room, indoor heated pool, an outdoor track with guide rail, a completely accessible game room and more. It is in this game room I have learned how to play Show Down which is much like an adapted version of air hockey for the blind and now that I’m getting pretty good at it I invite anyone to challenge me to a game.
The main attraction that takes ones breath away at Oral Hull is the Enchanted Garden which consists of peaceful winding paths lined with fragrant and eye complimenting flowers and plants. This accessible garden for the blind and visually impaired provides Braille and large print signs next to each item offering a description of what the plant or flower is that sits before the person and what it looks like.
I invite all to take the Oral Hull challenge and sign up for their Adventure Retreat. There is something to do for everyone. If you’re not as wild and crazy as I am and would still love to be part of a memorable week filled with fun events and activities I invite you to join up with many who are already partaking in a separate vacation week for blind and visually impaired adults at Oral Hull.
If you are interested in obtaining more information about these vacation weeks or to sign up for next summer please contact Oral Hull’s Director Jeff Lann at (503) 668-6195. See you next summer.

Seen and heard from Oral Hull Park
Our 2008 Lions Barbeque and Family Fun Day was one of the best in recent years. Ideal weather, swimming, live music, good friends (including many new participants) and of course great food highlighted this annual event. Our thanks to the Gresham Lions Supper Club and Parkrose Lions for their culinary skills. We also appreciate the great support from our community,
local Lions Clubs, District O Regional Governor Sharon Elder and the Sandy Kiwanis Club. Congratulations to our committee of James McCree, Bob Sell and Patty Sell.
Recent visitors to Oral Hull Park have made remarks about the new “feel” to our facility. Our new carpeting and freshly painted interior in Rainbow Lodge are very apparent. Other operational expenses of maintaining Oral Park are often unnoticed. The Oral Hull Board of Director’s recently approved emergency funding to replace the engine on our 24 passenger bus. Repairs to our septic system and a new commercial refrigerator are also summer time improvements.
Oral Hull Goes Green
You can help us keep our expense down by limiting your luggage when you visit Oral Hull for a weekender or short stay (3 nights).
Each member/guest is allowed one medium sized suitcase (not exceeding 20 pounds) and two small pieces of hand/carry on luggage on the Oral Hull bus (to be carried on your seat). Necessary medical devices are excluded. Members are to be entitled to one locker in the Morgan Recreation Hall for additional storage.
Lock to be provided by the member. The Oral Hull Foundation is not responsible for personal property. Your cooperation will enable us to limit the number of buses we use for weekend transportation.
Oral Hull Weekender Policy
All Weekender members and guests must be able to attend to their personal needs. If assistance is required with self help skills or transitioning from a wheelchair a caregiver is required. Provision of a caregiver is a responsibility of the participant.
If you are unable to attend our annual meeting and you are a current member of Oral Hull Park consider voting by proxy. Proxy votes must be written, signed and dated and must be given to someone assigned to vote at the board level. Proxy votes must be verified prior to the vote itself and for a specified topic. Proxy votes can only be used for an item that the member is entitled to vote on.
New additions to the Green/Nelson Library include a new Perkins Brailler donated by Albert Rouse and a computer donated by Flora Nelson.
Congratulations to Oral Hull member Jane McIver.
Jane will receive the 2008 Donald Wing Hathaway Lifelong Learning Award from the Hadley School for the Blind on Thursday, October 9, 2008. This award is presented annually to a student who uses Hadley course for self improvement as a means to contribute to society and his or her community.
